Gem of the North Endure

Every 22nd of January we celebrate the fiesta of Vigan City as a reminder of its cityhood. However this years celebration is different contrary to the covid-19 pandemic that greatly affects the whole world. Despite the underlying challenges the city government headed by Mayor Juan Carlo Medina proved their effort to celebrate this annual event. A celebration we aren’t used to seeing, but a celebration we must continue as we embrace the new normal.

The Vigan City fiesta not only celebrates the old ciudad Fernandina becoming a city. It shows the culture and heritage of the people. A Hispanic culture that dates back to centuries, and the traditions we still carry up to these day. It is important to carry on these traditions and culture as it is our trademark being one of the 7 wonder cities of the world and a UNESCO world heritage site.

Though because of the covid 19- pandemic we won’t see lots of people attending to witness this grand event. Most of us will likely be home or just smiling under are masks. But these won’t change the fact that we are celebrating with pure hearts. To show that no matter what problems we face we always endure and continuing to move-on. Making the most out of everything along the way.

The covid-19 pandemic may have rampart our lives, but this wont stop us from continuing on in living. Looking back to our roots and namesakes. Because of the efforts and cooperation we have, this years celebration may have been very different as to what we usually do, but we promoted the significance in celebrating it to uplift ourselves and to our cultures.
